You may have noticed a brand new, two-story commercial building is nearing completion at 3401 S. West Shore Blvd. (on the block near the traffic light at W. El Prado Blvd). But the site doesn’t have any obvious signs of what this building is going to be used for. We did some digging and found interesting answers!

This new building will help fill in the lack of restaurants in this part of South Tampa with TWO new restaurants and a mystery option. All of it will be brought to us by the Tastes Pretty Good restaurant group, which also owns the Michelin-Starred Rocca, Bar Terroir, Streetlight Taco, and Lumbre in Tampa.

On the first floor will be White Wolf, billed as a “rustic encore to Rocca’s cuisine” with handmade pastas, regional Italian dishes, and Italian-American classics. There’s already another Italian restaurant (recently rebranded to Luigi’s Kitchen) within mere sight of this building, so this is not exactly the gap that needed to be filled in this area.

Above White Wolf will be Carnivore Club using only a portion of the second floor to create a smaller restaurant with just a 34-seat chef’s counter built around an open wood-fired grill. It will serve “meticulously sourced meats” with “many dry-aged in-house”. This sounds like the type of place Michelin will be evaluating in no time! The remaining portion of the second floor will be the still-undefined Salon at Carnivore Club— perhaps a speakeasy or cigar lounge?

Even if this Westshore trio doesn’t earn Tastes Pretty Good their second Michelin Star, at least Carnivore Club sounds like a very different dining experience from the three dive bars, gas station tacos, and pizza joint nearby. No projected opening dates yet, but it looks like late 2026 or 2027.

The Hadley at Hyde Park, also known as Edge at 1702— the 259-unit apartment complex at 1702 W. Cleveland St. near Hyde Park Village— just sold for $70 million. This is the property’s third sale in four years, and is $45 million below its 2022 peak of $115 million. In researching these two apartment names, we were struck by the overall 3.4-star Google rating and 1.1 to 1.8 star ratings on Yelp and rental sites. Do you think that has anything to do with the frequent buying, selling, and declining value of this property? 🤔

Nine years ago this week, Hurricane Irma passed through Florida after triggering the then-largest evacuation in state history. Tampa Bay avoided the catastrophic storm surge people had feared, but South Tampa still experienced hurricane-force gusts, fallen trees, and widespread power outages. Four to seven feet of water was pushed OUT of parts of Tampa Bay, allowing people to walk far out onto land where water normally is. The above photos of this phenomena are part of the official National Weather Service recap of Irma on weather.gov.

Early September is when songbird and shorebird fall migration starts ramping up in Hillsborough County. Look for southbound warblers, vireos, flycatchers, and other small migratory birds. Try the wooded areas of Picnic Island Park or another South Tampa park shortly after sunrise, when recently arrived birds are most active. Check the eBird app for the locations of recent sightings others have reported.
