New Development

Red box indicates the rough location that matches the description for a new tower in Midtown Tampa.
Midtown Tampa will be getting a new 23-story tower with 339 apartment units at Himes Avenue and Cypress Street. Right now, that site is partially a parking lot and an office building, which will be torn down. This development is currently in the permitting phase with no target dates announced yet.
Ballast Point Pier is one step closer to returning! Hurricane Helene severely damaged the pier, resulting in its closure over two years ago. The city wants engineering firms to submit proposals by Oct. 8 to finally assess what remains and determine what can be repaired.
Andy’s Frozen Custard chain has filed for city rezoning approval with plans to replace BJ’s Alabama BBQ on the northwest corner of South Dale Mabry Highway and West El Prado Boulevard.
Traffic Changes
Kennedy Boulevard from Woodlynne Avenue to Brevard Avenue: overnight lane closures for repaving on Oct. 4–8 from 10 PM–6:30 AM.
Raymond James Stadium will have heavier traffic around it for the Buccaneers vs. Green Bay Packers NFL game on Oct. 4 at 1 PM.

Foodie Find

Sev Puri at Curry Leaves Indian Cuisine. (By Danielle Glick for The South Tampa Scroll).
This dish is such an explosion of delicious flavors and textures, it’s difficult to know where to begin describing it! The base is a cluster of hollow, wafer thin, crispy puri spheres stuffed with mashed potatoes and chickpeas. Hiding inside are also tomatoes, red onions, cilantro, tamarind, and mint chutney for a pop of freshness with all that savory. The top is sprinkled with a beautiful array of crispy sev, yogurt drizzle, micro-greens, and pomegranate seeds. I don’t even like chickpeas, but I LOVE this Sev Puri at Curry Leaves!
Businesses on the Move
Thee Hen House Bookstore: a new converted house and cafe gathering space with donated used books for sale and for free had a soft opening on Oct. 1 and will have a grand opening on Oct. 17 at 3603 W. Azeele St.

Hidden History
Bring It Back: The Old Meeting House

Old Meeting House sign. (Courtesy Ciccio Restaurant Group.)
A reader asked us to bring back The Old Meeting House restaurant, and in a way, it’s already back!
Jim Strickland's Old Meeting House at 901 S. Howard Ave. started churning 100% natural, handmade ice cream in 1947, selling it for five cents a scoop and thirty-five cents a pint. Regulars also came for comfort food, like homemade spaghetti and meatballs, country fried steak, and meatloaf. By 1997, some of them had their own permanent spots at the orange, L-shaped Formica counter. After nearly six decades and a change of ownership, the beloved diner closed in 2003, and the space later became Daily Eats restaurant.
Daily Eats recently closed on June 15 to rebrand and renovate. It reopened on Aug. 20 with elevated diner food and a few Daily Eats favorites under a new name that honors the original, simply “Meeting House.”
While the name is back on Howard Avenue, we suspect the nickel ice cream won't be!

Upcoming Natural Events

A super tall, full double rainbow persisted in pieces over South Tampa for 2.5 hours until the Sun set on Sept. 19— as seen from Gandy Bridge Beach. (By Danielle Glick for The South Tampa Scroll).
Notable Weather Changes: Rain, overcast skies, and humidity are back, with numerous showers and thunderstorms forecast for Oct. 5–9.
Hurricane Prep: Inspect downspouts and clear debris from the bottoms before this upcoming rain streak begins.
Drought Status: One-day-a-week watering was set to have ended by now, but the Southwest Florida Water Management District has instead extended our "Extreme" Water Shortage through Mar. 31, 2027!
Major Sky Events:
The Draconid meteor shower will be active Oct. 6–10. Unlike many meteor showers, this one is best watched during reasonable evening hours, instead of pre-dawn, especially since the Moon won’t be bright. The peak will be after sunset on Oct. 8. Expect a modest shower, with a handful of meteors per hour under good conditions.
Saturn will be at its brightest, closest, biggest point of the year (called “opposition”) on Oct. 4.

With frequent rain in our forecast, now's a good time to make sure your umbrella is up to the task. I can’t recommend this Windproof Compact Umbrella* highly enough. It’s the only umbrella I’ve ever used that has never flipped inside-out or leaked, and I’ve been using it for eleven years! It's lightweight and folds small enough to fit in a purse or backpack. Its waterproof sleeve allows you to put even a wet umbrella back in your bag. It comes in many colors, and some have sky designs on the inside:

Wildlife Sightings
The Great Florida Birding & Wildlife Trail says fall songbird migration brings Yellow Warblers, Eastern Wood-Pewees, and other migrants to the mangroves and hardwood patches at Picnic Island Park. eBird users have spotted both species at MacDill AFB in the past few days, so they are likely next door at Picnic Island, too.
